Jojo Project: combining design and sustainability
Published in Case Studies on June 8, 2010
Last week, a college friend of mine, Chris, launched his brand new & innovative project called Jojo Project! It can be defined in three simple words: choose - act – check. And it’s because it’s so simple that I love it! The concept is to combine design and sustainability. On their website, you can buy the shoes he and his team designed (and even customize them!). After making your choice of color and size, you then choose which project you want to support. You can either fight climate change by planting a tree in Africa (through Tree-Nation) or you can contribute to the construction of a water well in Sierra Leone (through The Water Project). All you then have to do is add the shoes to your cart and with a simple click of your mouse, you just contribute to a social or environmental action.
I have to say, these shoes just seem perfect for summertime! Have a look!

Like the visibility aspect of this project a lot! And the fact they combine personal branding with sustainability in a ‘sexy’ way.
I have one question though, how sustainable is the production of the shoes?
This reminds me of the trend towards ethical consumerism/consumption, which is perhaps best embodied by the (RED) campaign. I understand sufficiency is one of the “pillars” of the Summit’s vision of a sustainable future, and I think that this is an important stepping stone in that direction — first combining the consumer impulse with the desire to do good.
